It all began in the summer of 2016… a group of strangers living in the same community came together to work on a proposal to the City of Vancouver to create our very own community garden right here in Champlain Heights adjacent to the Champlain Heights Community Centre. We formed the Champlain Heights Garden Committee, now a sub-committee of the Champlain Heights Community Association.
Fast forward one and a half years later, the hard work and patience is starting to pay off. We are now working very closely with the Park Board to make the community garden happen! The park designer at the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has recently approved our proposed garden drawings.
The next step is for community engagement. The Park Board will post an information sign on the future garden site, send out notifications to all neighbours living within two blocks of the garden, and set up a short online survey. Please show your support for the garden by participating in the survey when it comes out.
After the community engagement is completed, the final step will be to bring the community garden proposal to the Park Board for their final decision. If all goes as planned, we could begin building as early as this spring! We will be looking for volunteers in the community to help us build the garden, so please come out and join us!
